Why does chocolate make us happy?

Monday, 15 Feb 2016

Chocolate, for many, is a wonderful thing. A guilty pleasure, a moment of bliss and something that makes them happy. However, the happiness feeling that people get when eating chocolate isn’t just to do with how good it tastes, but is actually rather scientific.

Did you know that there are over 300 naturally-occurring chemicals in chocolate, and some of these can affect the human brain? The three main chemicals that produce the happiness feeling in humans are;

Tryptophan – an amino acid found in chocolate which is used by the brain to make serotonin (the neurotransmitter that can produce a happy feeling)

Phenylethylalanine – a chemical that acts as an anti-depressant

Theobromine – a weak stimulant that works alongside caffeine to produce a ‘high’ feeling

So there you have it, another great reason to indulge in some chocolate every now and then, and Patisserie Valerie can help you get your fix with our range of chocolate cakes available to order online.
